Today marks the legendary Kanamara Matsuri, better known as Japan’s Penis Festival, happening in Kawasaki just outside Tokyo. And before your brain goes straight to the obvious… this isn’t just about shock value or giggles (though there’s plenty of both).
This centuries-old festival is rooted in protection, healing, and sexual health. Historically, people came to pray for fertility, safe childbirth, and protection from sexually transmitted infections. Today, it’s evolved into a vibrant, joyful celebration of sexuality, body positivity, and community — with proceeds supporting HIV research.
And yes… there are giant penis statues. Multiple. Including a very famous pink one that gets carried through the streets like a rock star.

You’ll find:
- Phallic-shaped candy and snacks
- Wild, colorful parades
- Locals and travelers celebrating without shame
- And an atmosphere that’s equal parts sacred, ridiculous, and liberating
It’s kind of our vibe.
At its core, this festival is about something we talk about all the time: Owning your body. Dropping the shame. Celebrating what you’ve got.
And maybe laughing a little along the way.

If nothing else, let this be your reminder…
The world is a lot more fun when we stop taking our bodies so damn seriously.
