Brad Speck Didn’t Try to Fit In. He Marched In and Owned the Damn Room.

There’s a certain kind of person who walks into a leather competition trying desperately to look like they belong.

And then there’s my friend, Brad Speck.
This past weekend at Mr Leather/Boot Black (Imlbb) (formerly Mid-Atlantic Leather), Brad headed into competition representing Cleveland knowing full well he probably wasn’t the odds-on favorite to win. When you’re standing next to guys who practically breathe leather 24 hours a day, it would’ve been easy to try blending in. Easy to sand off the weird edges. Easy to play the game.

Brad said "fuck no" to all of that.

Instead, he walked in wearing that marching band uniform like a proud little menace with a secret. While many contestants delivered the standard introductions, Brad marched right up to the microphone with drum major confidence and announced to the crowd that he was Brad Speck from Cleveland, Ohio… and that marching band was responsible for his uniform fetish.

The audience lost their minds.

And then came the reveal.

Off came the uniform to reveal a leather jockstrap underneath, and suddenly the whole thing clicked into place. It wasn’t a gimmick. It wasn’t trying too hard. It was Brad being completely, gloriously himself.

That’s what made it work.

Look at the photo. Almost everybody else is dressed to blend into the leather archetype. Black leather. Tough poses. Serious energy. Then there’s Brad up in the corner dressed like the world’s happiest queer marching band commander who wandered into a leather competition and accidentally stole the spotlight anyway.

That takes guts.

Brad heads up the Cleveland Pride Band, and under his leadership that organization has exploded in visibility, quality, and energy. He’s also the creator of Bandlesque, which is exactly as delightfully unhinged as it sounds: a saucy mashup of burlesque and live band performance that somehow works beautifully because Brad understands something most people never figure out:

Authenticity is magnetic.

And here’s the part I really love.

Brad has a beautiful body. Thick. Masculine. Real. But compared to some of the men competing, you can tell he’s not somebody who made leather his entire identity or turned himself into a gym-built clone of everyone else onstage. He walked in carrying his own flavor of sexy, his own passions, his own quirks, and his own story.

Out of more than 68 Mr Leather Contestants (and 4 boot black contestants) , Brad landed in the Top 10!

That’s huge.

Even sweeter? He shared that for the first time in 48 years, Ohio had three contestants place in the Top 20.

Buckeye State showed up.

There’s a lesson in all of this that has absolutely nothing to do with leather competitions.

The people who become unforgettable are rarely the ones trying hardest to fit the mold. They’re the ones willing to stand there in full color while everybody else is busy painting themselves beige.

Brad didn’t win by pretending to be somebody else.

He won by being unmistakably Brad.

That’s the kind of victory that
lasts a lot longer than a title.
Way to go, Cleveland. Way to go, Brad.
