National White Shirt Day, observed each year on February 11, honors the end of the Flint sit-down strike, one of the most influential labor actions in American history. The strike began on December 30, 1936, when General Motors workers occupied several plants in Flint, Michigan and refused to leave. For 44 days, they slept on factory floors, organized supply lines, and held their ground while production across the auto industry slowed to a near halt.
At the time, many workers were recovering from the financial devastation of the Great Depression. GM had cut wages, pushed exhausting production speeds, and rehired employees at lower pay without regard for seniority. The newly passed Wagner Act gave workers the legal right to organize, and the Flint strike became a defining test of that power.
The standoff ended on February 11, 1937, when General Motors agreed to recognize the United Auto Workers as the official bargaining representative for its employees. The agreement helped reshape workplace standards across the country, strengthening expectations around fair pay, safer conditions, and structured negotiation between labor and management.
The “white shirt” carries its own quiet rebellion. At the time, supervisors were the only ones permitted to wear white shirts. Workers adopted the look in solidarity, sending a clear message that dignity and respect should not belong to a select few.
