Last night, as I was crawling into bed, I caught myself doing that little mental victory lap we all do at the end of a long day.
“Wow… I got a lot done today.”
And honestly, by most standards, I did.
I created more than thirty pages of legal documents.
Cranked out half of Friday’s newsletter.
Finished and presented a work presentation.
Worked through about ten pages for next month’s magazine.
Sat through a couple of meetings where people actually seemed to like my ideas.
You know… productive.
But right as I was drifting off to sleep, my brain tapped me on the shoulder and said, “Hold on a second.”
Did you really get things done today?
Or did you create things today?
Because those are two very different animals.
Productivity is about tasks. Checklists. Efficiency. Moving things from the “to-do” column to the “done” column.
Creativity is something else entirely.
Creativity is taking a blank page and turning it into a story.
It’s shaping a pile of messy thoughts into something clear and useful.
It’s building structure where there was nothing before.
And when I thought about my day through that lens, the whole thing changed.
I didn’t just complete tasks.
I made things.
Documents that didn’t exist that morning.
Ideas that turned into plans.
Words that turned into stories.
That realization shifted something small but important in my brain.
Instead of waking up today thinking, “Let’s see how much I can get done,” I woke up thinking something much better.
I hope I get to create a bunch of good stuff today.
That feels different.
Lighter.
More playful.
More like the reason many of us started doing what we do in the first place.
Because whether you’re writing, building a business, designing a trip, planning an event, or dreaming up your next chapter… the magic isn’t in the productivity.
The magic is in the creation.
And if we’re lucky, we get to do a little bit of that every single day.
