Yesterday was my birthday. Nothing dramatic, just cake, candles, and that quiet moment where you sit back and take it all in. And somewhere between the first bite and going back for more, I started thinking about cake… not just eating it, but what it actually is.
I used to bake. A lot. Cakes, especially. Wedding cakes, birthday cakes, anniversary cakes, new home cakes...you name it, I did it. And when you spend that much time mixing, shaping, waiting, and decorating, it stops feeling like just “dessert” and starts to feel like a process. Almost like a ritual.
And if you’re one of my witchy brothers, you already know where this is going.
Back in the earliest days, spells weren’t just spoken. They were written down and then consumed. Sometimes on tree bark, which sounds absolutely brutal. Later on, people moved to paper, which wasn’t much better. At some point, someone had a very obvious, very smart thought… if you’re going to ingest your intention, maybe put it on something that’s actually meant to be eaten.
That’s where bread comes in. It’s simple, grounding, and it already involves your hands, your time, your focus. You knead it, shape it, bake it. It’s not a stretch to see how it became part of something more intentional.
Then, over time, things got a little more indulgent. Cakes came along. Softer, sweeter, more celebratory. The problem was they didn’t travel well. They’d dry out fast. So bakers started coating them in lard to protect them during transport. Not exactly appetizing, but it worked. When the cake arrived, the lard got scraped off and tossed.
Until someone figured out that if you mix that fat with sugar, you get something you actually want to eat. That’s how icing came into the picture.
And once you’ve got a smooth, sweet surface, it’s only a matter of time before you start writing on it.
“Happy Birthday.”
We treat it like decoration, but it’s more than that. You’ve got a group of people gathered around, candles lit, everyone focused on one person, all sharing the same intention. Then you eat the cake, words and all.
That’s a spell. Plain and simple.
A birthday party is basically a coven. Just a little less obvious about it.
So here’s my takeaway, especially after yesterday. When someone offers you cake, don’t brush it off. If you care about that person, if you want them to feel celebrated, just take the bite.
You’re not just eating dessert. You’re joining in on a small, sweet piece of shared magic.
