Let's Celebrate The Strap That Held It All Together
May 1st doesn’t ask for much. Just a little support.
Back in 1874, a guy named C.F. Bennett looked at a bunch of bicycle messengers bouncing over rough Chicago streets and thought, “Yeah… we need to protect that situation.” So he created the jockstrap. Functional. Practical. Not exactly sexy.
Fast forward 150 years, and here we are.
Somewhere along the way, that simple piece of gear stopped being just about protection and turned into something else entirely. It became confidence. It became style. It became a quiet little rebellion wrapped around your hips.
Because let’s be honest. Nobody puts on a jockstrap by accident.
Athletes still swear by them for support and ventilation. They do exactly what they were designed to do. Keep things in place. Reduce impact. Let the body move without getting in its own way.
But outside the locker room?
The jockstrap slipped into queer culture and never looked back. Dance floors. Bedrooms. Pride parades. Photo shoots. It went from hidden necessity to intentional statement. Minimal fabric. Maximum effect.
It says: Yeah… I chose this on purpose.
And that’s the real evolution. Not the design. Not the materials. The mindset.
So today, whether you’re wearing one under your clothes, showing it off, or just appreciating what it represents… take a second.
For the invention that started as protection.
For the piece that became expression.
For the confidence it quietly demands.
Happy International Jockstrap Day.
