A recent essay by James Wallis explores something many gay men feel instinctively but rarely articulate: gay friendships are not optional extras. They are foundational.
Wallis argues that gay friends offer a kind of understanding that doesn’t require explanation. Shared language, shared history, and shared emotional shorthand allow gay men to relax in ways they often cannot elsewhere. From validating experiences that were once second-guessed, to accurately reflecting who we are without filtering our lives through a straight lens, these friendships play a quiet but powerful role in emotional wellbeing.
The article highlights how gay friendships often carry shared timelines, delayed milestones, and common losses, as well as specific joys. They create space for complexity, contradiction, grief, pride, and humor to coexist without pressure to perform a “finished” version of oneself. For many men, these relationships also represent chosen safety, especially when early environments failed to provide it.
Rather than replacing family or romantic relationships, gay friendships occupy their own essential category. They support the parts of us that learned early to stay alert, guarded, or self-editing, and give those parts permission to rest.
